Tower Defense X: BETA Dual Path Upgrades Guide
Path A vs Path B for every core tower — where to spend Crystals before Expert and Nightmare.
Most towers in Tower Defense X split into two upgrade paths at mid-tier. Path choice shapes DPS profile, range, survivability, and synergy with co-op roles. Crystals unlock deeper nodes — a permanent account investment — so guessing wrong hurts more than a bad single-match Gold buy.
This guide explains dual path logic for core units, when to commit Crystals, and how paths interact with Expert and Nightmare strategies. Redeem codes from the Codes Hub to supplement Crystal income.
How dual paths work
When a tower hits its branch tier, you choose Path A or Path B (names vary in UI). Key facts:
- Paths diverge upgrade trees — you cannot max both without extreme Crystal budgets.
- Some maps favor cleave; others need single-target boss delete.
- Co-op teams should coordinate paths to avoid redundant roles.
- Patches rebalance nodes — re-check the Tier List after updates.
Plan paths before spending. Respec exists in some forms but is costly; treat branches as semi-permanent.
Juggernaut and Golden Juggernaut
Juggernaut is the land anchor most players meet first.
Path themes — One line typically emphasizes area damage / cleave for add waves; the other focuses single-target burst for bosses and high-HP elites.
Pick cleave when — Maps spawn dense clumps or dual land splits where one Juggernaut covers multiple choke overlaps.
Pick single-target when — Boss waves define the run (Expert and Nightmare) and adds are manageable by EDJ or Missile Trooper.
Golden Juggernaut extends the chosen identity. Do not rush Golden without a locked path plan and Gold flow from Gold Farming.
EDJ (Explosive Defense Jet)
EDJ handles air — the most common Expert failure point.
Swarm / burst paths — Excel when flying enemies stack; pairs with land chokepoints where bombs catch clumps.
Sustained DPS paths — Better for spread air lanes and armored fliers that survive single bursts.
If your squad lacks Laser Gunner, bias EDJ toward sustained coverage. If land is over-stacked, burst paths delete air swarms cheaply.
Laser Gunner
Laser Gunner offers consistent beam damage — strong air and elite killer.
Range / pierce paths — Cover wide flight lines on multi-spawn Nightmare maps.
Damage ramp paths — Melts bosses when protected by Medic and Operator buffs.
Laser Gunner competes with EDJ for Crystal budgets. Co-op teams often split: one player maxes EDJ swarms, another Laser Gunner for sustained air.
Railgunner
Railgunner is premium single-target burst for bosses.
Charge / pierce paths — Favor maps with one dominant boss and straight sight lines.
Utility paths — Sometimes add slow or armor shred — valuable when group lacks Operator debuffs.
Place Railgunner after economy is online (Gold Farming). A path-maxed Railgunner bought too early starves Farms.
Missile Trooper
Missile Trooper delivers explosive ranged burst — overlaps Railgunner role but with different timing.
Choose Missile Trooper paths when bosses pause or clump; choose Railgunner when you need one massive shot on a moving target. Co-op groups rarely need both maxed on the same team.
Farm
Farm paths affect income multipliers vs defensive utility.
Income paths — Default for Gold Farming and long Endless sessions. Prioritize breakpoints that pay back within 5–7 waves.
Utility paths — Occasional defensive or aura perks — rarely worth it unless you are the dedicated Farmer in a static co-op group.
Expert teams need one income-focused Farmer — not four hybrid paths that pay late.
Medic
Medic keeps tower HP alive when enemies focus structures.
Radius / throughput paths — Heal more towers faster — mandatory for Nightmare focus-fire.
Overheal / shield paths — Situational on maps with tower-killer elites.
Under-investing Medic paths while maxing DPS is a common Nightmare failure. Heal paths are cheaper than rebuilding Railgunner.
Operator
Operator buffs nearby towers — force multiplier when placed correctly.
Buff radius paths vs intensity paths depend on your static cluster layout. Place Operators between Juggernaut and Railgunner lines for boss phases; avoid empty map corners.
Warship and Mine Layer (sea)
Warship — Sustained water DPS. Path for range on wide sea lanes vs raw damage on short rushes.
Mine Layer — Trap layers slow and soften sea stacks. Path for density vs burst mine damage.
Maps without sea can skip these — but Expert and Nightmare rotate water lanes often. See Getting Started map scouting tips.
Crystal budget priority order
For accounts with limited Crystals (even after Codes):
- Primary land DPS path (Juggernaut)
- Primary air path (EDJ or Laser Gunner)
- Farm income breakpoint
- Medic heal radius
- Boss burst (Railgunner or Missile Trooper)
- Luxury / Golden upgrades
Adjust if your co-op role is fixed Farmer or air-only.
Path coordination in co-op
Before Expert or Nightmare:
- Call your main path investments aloud.
- Avoid duplicate boss burst maxing.
- Ensure at least one swarm air path and one sustained air path across the team.
After you commit
Test paths in Elite and Endless before Nightmare. Use Controls to optimize targeting per path — cleave Juggernaut wants different modes than Railgunner.
Dual paths are Tower Defense X’s build-craft layer. Respect them, and Expert stops being a gear check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I switch dual paths after choosing?
TDX treats paths as major investments. Respec may be limited or costly — plan before spending Crystals.
Which tower should I upgrade first?
Usually Juggernaut for land, EDJ for air, then Farm income breakpoints. Exact order depends on your main difficulty target.
Do both players need the same paths in co-op?
No. Complementary paths work best — one cleave Juggernaut and one boss Railgunner, for example.
Are Golden Juggernaut paths worth it?
Worth it for dedicated land mains after core air and economy paths are set. Not a beginner Crystal sink.
How do I get more Crystals for paths?
Redeem active codes on the Codes Hub, complete milestones, and push higher difficulties for rewards.
Do patches reset dual paths?
Patches rebalance nodes but rarely reset choices. Re-read Tier List and guide notes after major updates.
